EV Charging at Home: Everything You Need to Know

    5 March 20266 min readJ's Electrical Team

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common across Swindon and Wiltshire — and for good reason. But one of the most frequent questions we get asked is: "How do I charge at home?" This guide covers everything from charger types to what to expect on installation day.

    Types of Home EV Charger

    3-pin plug (Mode 2) — Not Recommended

~8 miles of range per hour

Using a standard 3-pin plug with an EVSE cable is technically possible but very slow and not designed for regular overnight charging. It can overload domestic sockets and is a potential fire risk if used on an extension lead.

    7kW Home Charger (Mode 3) — Recommended

~30 miles of range per hour

A dedicated wall-mounted unit is by far the safest and most practical option for home charging. A 7kW unit can fully charge most EVs overnight and is specifically designed for the load involved.

    22kW Three-Phase Charger

~80+ miles of range per hour

These require a three-phase electricity supply, which most UK homes don't have. They're more common in commercial settings but can be installed in homes with the right supply.

    What Does Installation Involve?

A home EV charger installation typically takes half a day. A qualified electrician will:

    • Assess your consumer unit to ensure it can handle the additional load
    • Run a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to the charger location
    • Mount the charge point unit on an exterior wall or in your garage
    • Connect and test the unit
    • Provide you with a BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate

    Smart Charging: Worth It?

Modern home chargers often come with smart features including app control, scheduled charging, and energy monitoring. If you're on a time-of-use tariff (such as Octopus Go or OVO Drive), you can schedule charging to run during off-peak hours — typically between midnight and 5am — when electricity can cost as little as 7–9p/kWh rather than 28p/kWh at peak times. This alone can save hundreds of pounds per year.

Important: Only use a certified installer

Home EV charger installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme (such as NICEIC). This ensures the work is safe, up to code, and that you receive the required electrical certificate. We cover all of Swindon, Chippenham, Cirencester, Royal Wootton Bassett, and Calne.

    EV Charging in Swindon

Swindon has seen a significant rise in EV ownership in recent years, partly due to its strong commuter links to Bristol and London and the growth of tech and logistics employers in the area. While the public charging network in Swindon town centre and at Great Western Designer Outlet continues to expand, relying solely on public chargers is impractical for daily driving. A dedicated home charger means your vehicle is always ready each morning — fully charged, without the detour. If you're in a newer development such as those around Wichelstowe or Tadpole Garden Village, your property may already have the cabling in place — ask us to check during a free survey.
